An Egg, A Medal and 100+ Years of Slijterij Dikkers History

Welcome to Slijterij Dikkers in Hoogeveen, where the historic building, the creaking wooden floor, brings back the feeling of the past, to a time of craft and nostalgia. Since 1912 we have been located on the Brinkstraat in a building that reminds us daily of the adventures of our founders. It is perhaps not every day that you find a liquor store where "drink" and "history" go hand in hand.

The Beginning: The Egg of Hoogeveen and Royal Medals

Our story does not begin in Hoogeveen, but in Kampen, where the Stibbe brothers established their name in 1856 with liqueurs so good that they won a medal at the world exhibition in Paris. A city where wine and champagne should be the standard. The Stibbes thought differently and won a gold medal. By winning the gold medal they were allowed to wear the Royal Coat of Arms.

The Stibbes did not sit still and wrote their own piece of history, until Albert Dikkers appeared on the scene in 1904. He saw opportunities in Hoogeveen, where the bustling egg market fitted in perfectly with his plans. A place full of fresh eggs turned out to be ideal for the production of advocaat. And so "Het Drentsche Ei" was born - an advocaat that is still sold to this day

An Art Nouveau Gem in Hoogeveen

In 1912 Albert Dikkers had a special building built on the Brinkstraat in Hoogeveen. The design, a magnificent example of Art Nouveau, was conceived by the renowned architect Carmiggelt. Today the building is known as a national monument.

Inside, the refined charm of a bygone era radiates. High ceilings and detailed tile tableaus take you back to a time when craftsmanship and style were the foundation of every experience. In the old days, herbs were dried in the attic, while eggs were kept in the cellar, ready to find their way into the bottles of advocaat that were produced here. This historic building is a living reminder of Dikkers’ tradition and still breathes the atmosphere of yesteryear.

From Stokers to Liquor Stores

In the 1960s, Dikkers made an important change. The stills were said goodbye and made way for a wholesale business. Although the distillery disappeared, the authentic liquor store tradition remained.

Today, Dikkers offers a carefully selected range of refined drinks. From classic jenevers and timeless liqueurs to an impressive selection of wines – all with a nod to the rich past. Our customers, who have often been coming to us for decades, know that Dikkers is not a place for a quick purchase. People come here for the luxury of a good conversation, an exclusive drink.

The Magic of the Regular Customer

Our shop may be a bit outside the city centre, but that doesn't bother our customers. "The best thing about this shop is the people," says Roel Rauwerdink. "The social happening, the chat - that's what makes it so special here." Dikkers' goal is for people to come not just for the drinks, but also for the conviviality and the story behind the bottle.
